You sure kept the audience waiting for long…
Well, it hasn’t been long. Soon after my last film, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, I got busy with Dil Bole Hadippa. Since I was playing a cricketer, I had to train in the game for six months before
shooting. In fact, Dil Bole… was ready by March, but the multiplex strike posed a hurdle. In a way, I see it as a boon as the film is now set for release on Mahalaya, an auspicious day. I hope and pray that it brings luck. So, you see, I’ve been working all through. I seriously need a break now.

And how essential is it for you, as an actor, to break the stereotype and spring back in a new avatar?
As an actor, it’s very important to reinvent myself. This time around, the script had all the scope. It’s probably the first time that a heroine will be playing a cricketer. And definitely, this is the first time that I play a Sardar boy. I didn’t want people to say that she essayed the role of a cricketer just for the heck of it. Hence, I toned my body to look like a cricketer. By the end of it all, my body had toned so beautifully that it was suggested I flaunt my body in the music video.

How difficult was attaining this toned look?
I was into yoga and weight training. I zipped my mouth. It’s been long since I have gorged on machher jhol and rosogolla. Frankly, I wanted to look the part and get my cricket right. Earlier, I wasn’t too much into the game. But thanks to Dil Bole…, I’ve started enjoying the game much more and stopped annoying my dad with the silly cricketing questions that I used to ask.

Any cricketing favourites?
Sachin Tendulkar is my all-time favourite.

Apart from the new look in this film, your supposed bikini act is also generating a lot of buzz…
Sorry to disappoint you but I’ve not sported a bikini in this film. Instead I’ve worn a salwar with a bikini top.

Rani has always been termed sweet, bubbly, chirpy, warm but seldom have you been called sizzling or hot. Will Dil Bole…change all of that?
If people start finding me hot, it will be for the better. And certainly, I take it as a compliment.

Bollywood seems to have got over older heroines being paired opposite young heroes…
Shahid and me are probably the same age. It’s just that he started late and I entered the industry at 17. But let me tell you that I look younger than him (laughs).

Now that Bipasha has stepped into Tollywood, when do we get to see you in a Bengali venture?
I want to do something worth my while. Are the directors listening?

Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra will be seen together in the remake of Hollywood film Bride Wars. Sources confirm the two have already signed on the dotted line and will be seen in a remake produced by Shrishti Arya.

The original starred Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway playing two best friends who are at war to get married on the same day and venue.
The remake will go on floors in the coming months. A source reveals, “Shrishti has bought the rights to remake the film. Both Priyanka and Katrina expressed their interest in the project on being approached. Having watched the original, they could relate to their characters.”

The producers are still finalising the rest of the cast. “Katrina and Priyanka have never worked together before. So it will be interesting to watch them as two best friends who fall apart at later stage. Also the characters need to be fashionable and trendy, which both Kat and PC are.”

In Manhattan, lawyer Liv and school teacher Emma have been best friends since their childhood. They both are proposed to, by their boyfriends on the same day and they plan their wedding parties in Plaza Hotel, using the services of the famous Marion St Claire. There’s a certain grimness about knowing your body system is misbehaving on you. How do you deal with this?
There is something sinister about your body under siege, under war. But you know the eastern tradition of warriorship, about being courageous enough to be vulnerable and open — it’s not so much about aggression. So I believe in the infinite power of the body to heal itself. I have to actually step back and trust and allow the process.

When Frank Zappa was asked about his coping with prostate cancer, he famously said “There are good days and there are bad days.” What are your days like?
I have days when I don’t want to get out of bed. Other days, especially when I’m on a steroid high, you can’t tie me down. I’ve been communicating with other Multiple Myeloma members and we laugh. There’s a business exec who says when he’s on steroids he wants to show up at the office in sweat pants because his dress pants don’t fit.

Will you be getting back to Bollywood when you are in full remission?
Why not! India has shown me so much support I’ll be happy to finally do some work there when I’m a member of the Full Remission Club. Chubby cheeks and all.

Since you heard this news, have you reached out to people you have not, for whatever reason, from the past years?
My decision to go public was an act of reaching out to an entire community.

If you could distill what you now think is important in life as opposed to what now seems to have been trivial, what would they be?
My basic spiritual belief system has only been reaffirmed not changed. I believe in basic goodness. I lean towards Buddhism so I believe there is Buddha nature in every individual.

Where do you draw your strength from?
I have done a lot of solitary meditation for the past few years. That inner space is important but I also now draw support from people. The Yellow Diaries (her blog) are a big source of strength. I read every single comment and make sure they are all posted for others to share. There are remarkable people and stories of inspiration and even practical information on the comment board.

Look at yourself in a mirror, how would you describe Lisa Ray?
I’m always surprised by what I see in the mirror and delighted by what’s in the plate in front of me.
