A Brief History of Porrn
Pornography has not always been inartistic and raw. In fact, pornography used to be multilayered and the porno of olde spread anti-establishment messages. Pornography in the 18th Century made social comments and was a medium for the low cultured beings in Europe to learn about the world around them. Fapping to a Palestinian gangbang could be considered a rough, modern equivalent.
This does not mean that when your mother/girlfriend/professor walks in on you, that you can claim you are educating yourself on the nuances and intricacies of the Papacy. Today’s porn has no artistic or literary merit:
Goddam she has great tits…
But I digress. No one in their right mind can see a political, religious, philosophical or any other ideological statement being made in this photo. I can only find a gorgeous, young, supple blonde with beautiful breasts crawling towards me, ready to play with my rod. This does not mean that back in the time of the French Revolution there were not gorgeous, young, supple blondes ready to show you how their feudal system was working properly. This on the other hand may be making a comment on the state of America’s waistline:
I apologize. That was trashy but let me tell you this; even the trashiest pron in the 1700’s still contained similar themes as the utmost highbrow literature of Voltaire, Rousseau and Diderot. These pornographic pamphlets criticized the philosophical standards of the day, the behavior of nobles and clergy, and the very way the French government was run. All of these messages were sent to the illiterate populace through the voyeur.
In the pornography, a sex scene would take place but there would also often be a man masturbating. This man invited the onlooker to masturbate along with him, and he would often “point” to where the porn’s hidden message could be found. The drawings would be in rococo style- meaning they would be ostentatious, elaborate, and just plain over the top.
Do you see that? The woman on the left is Mary Antoinette and obviously she loves the cock. In another scene in this pornographic pamphlet the Queen is getting her pussy eaten out by Marquis de Lafayette (the guy riding the huge penis). What social comment does this make? Who the fuck knows but it obviously made sense to the illiterate in the 1780’s because it in part caused them to overthrow the Estates General.
In pamphlets one could often find females becoming the aggressors, men penetrating each other, and bestiality; it was hard to find one-on-one heterosexual porn. Images would show priests ravaging little boy’s assholes, and nuns fucking on crucifixes. Pornography would show the king in the middle of orgies with all sorts of deformed people. It was pretty much a way cooler Daily Show.
Pornography violated the established social codes. The images created so much fear that many historians believe they were a driving force in starting the French Revolution. The literacy rate was somewhere around 30% so obviously the other 70% had to get their dose of anti-establishment material from somewhere else besides books. Most people couldn’t got to a saloon and discuss the highbrow literature of the time. They were stuck on Grub Street having a circle jerk to pictures of an archbishop putting the Holy Spirit into 12 year old girls (and dogs).
The messages conveyed to the common people through pornography helped to dethrone those who abused their power in France and other countries in Western Europe. Porn brought the once godly empire to its knees, and made a mockery of it. Porn implanted the idea in the common people’s collective mind that the system was not all high and mighty and that they could actually overthrow the system. Maybe we need a dose of purposeful porn today.
